Site Redesign Notes
On June 22, 2010, I published a redesigned version of my web site. I felt that this was
required because I have done very little to update the look and feel of the site since I last
worked on it extensively in 2003. Here are some of things that I have done in this redesign,
as well as some of things that I still intend to do.
Things done in the redesign:
- I have updated the stylesheet, site-wide—When I first developed my web site,
I didn't have much of an understanding of the use of colour palettes for a web site. In this
redesign, I have selected a colour palette for the site, and I have applied that palette
site-wide, although some work still remains to be done in applying this palette to some of
the graphics, particularly in the Family History section.
- I have simplified and standardized the page layouts—My initial web site
design was heavily dependent upon tables to set the layout. I have moved much of this layout
to a "div"-based structure. Also, I have simplified a lot of the layout for a cleaner look
- I have updated my photos—In 2008 I bought a Hi-Def widescreen LCD monitor
(1920 x 1080). Since that time I have been redoing many of my photos in this higher
resolution, and in this redesign, I have used these higher-resolution images in both my
Photography and Family History sections.
Things that I yet plan to do:
- Add more photos—I plan to add more photos as I get scans of my old photos
done, and as I take more photos. I had added very few photo to my site from about 2003 until
- Improve the current photos—Many of the photos that I have put up on this
site, even with the redesign, are in need of a lot of retouching work. As this can be a very
time-consuming process, particularly for old and damaged photos, it will happen only
gradually over a long period.
- Add some missing pages—I have long planned to write a few more content pages,
particularly, to add a page of photography notes and a few more biographies of some of my
ancestors, as well as expand the two biographies that I have written.
- Rewrite the essays—Almost all of my essays so far have been fairly light
efforts. I have not done extensive research, and I have not intended to argue a point in any
of these essays, just make some observations. I intend to change this considerably, making
the essays much more serious efforts arguing very specific points.
- Write the Sustainability section—I think that a restructuring of our economic
system to make it much more sustainable is probably the most important objective that our
society should be pursuing at present. Yet much of what I have read about sustainability
seems to be missing some very important considerations. I am currently doing some research
on the subject, which I hope will provide the material for a book-length essay. I remain
uncertain whether this project will contain enough new ideas and information of interest to
- Extend the interactivity of the site—Currently, this web site is primarily a
static HTML-based web site, with very few controls providing only very simple actions. Over
time I plan to greatly extend the interactivity of this site, such as providing slideshow
and fullscreen-view features in the photo galleries, possibly keyword searches on the photo
galleries and the family photo albums, and perhaps automated generation of the family tree
pages from a database of family information.
More changes may yet be done and planned, which I intend to report on this
